Interview with Dr. Aslan
My name is Dr. Ismail Aslan, and I work as the medical director and hair surgeon at the SEQUOIA-HAIR clinic in Istanbul. Over the past ten years, I have performed approximately 1,500 hair transplants.
I was born and raised in Türkiye, studied medicine, and gained professional experience in various clinics. I have been working in the field of hair transplantation since 2013.
In 2019, I moved to Germany and received my medical license in 2020. Until March 2023, I worked as a private physician in Germany and Türkiye, specializing in hair transplantation.
After moving to Istanbul, I started establishing my own practice/clinic. As a licensed, German-speaking doctor in Germany, I currently treat patients primarily in Istanbul.
What factors trigger your commitment?
95% of patients reported having a positive outlook on the treatment even a year later and would apply again. This result motivates me to continue my work and maintain patient satisfaction. Patients who had surgery with me 10 years ago reported positive results and are now sharing this success story with relatives, friends, and acquaintances who are experiencing genetically-induced hair loss. It is encouraging that most patients are surprised by how painless such treatment can be after a detailed consultation and surgical procedure. Many patients report that the experience was different from what they had previously imagined.
What are the most important aspects of hair transplantation?
Four aspects are crucial for a successful hair transplant:
First, planning. Strategic planning is essential. Hair transplantation is a complex mathematical process because hair loss is a dynamic and progressive process. In most cases, a single treatment is insufficient. Therefore, a personalized and sustainable treatment plan must be developed. What are the patient’s preferences regarding the planned hair transplant? What are their expectations regarding the outcome? Is the desired shape realistic? Is it advisable? A comprehensive discussion about potential side effects, the actual process, and post-operative care is necessary, especially considering medium and long-term effects. Results will vary depending on the patient’s age. To investigate a genetic phenomenon within a family, analysis across multiple generations is necessary. For example, by examining parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, you can identify a hereditary trait such as hair loss. Analyzing family history can provide insight into the progression of hair loss.
Secondly, the transplant area, donor area, and hairline should be designed to be harmonious with the patient’s face. A soft and natural-looking hairline, as well as clean and even hair harvesting from the donor area, are extremely important.
Thirdly, density. Maintaining sufficient density is important to achieve a natural result.
Fourthly, gentle, even, and homogeneous harvesting of donor hair from the back of the head is necessary to ensure an adequate reserve for the future.
In conclusion, meeting these four criteria is very important to me.
What distinguishes our clinic from similar establishments in Türkiye?
There are five critical elements that distinguish our clinic from most mass clinics in Türkiye:

First step: Intercultural competence. Language barriers are a common problem in medical care abroad. Therefore, interpreters are on-site to bridge any potential communication gaps. However, it is important to evaluate the results of such a mediation strategy and verify its accuracy and completeness. As a German-speaking physician and a licensed medical professional in Germany, I can understand patients at a higher level and thus overcome potential language barriers.
Second important point: One of the most important elements of the hair transplant decision is a qualified consultation with the treating physician. This physician should provide comprehensive care to the patient before and after the operation. For patients who are not yet familiar with this issue, it is difficult to correctly understand and assess their needs. Consultations are often conducted by sales representatives rather than healthcare professionals, so patients may not be able to see the surgeon until they arrive in the operating room. Some clinics even offer this medical care without a physician’s involvement. Ensuring consistency between the treatment plan recommended by the physician and the patient’s expectations is difficult. A consultant lacking medical qualifications lacks experience in hair diagnosis and therefore cannot make informed decisions and reduce the risk of adverse outcomes. They cannot assess whether additional drug treatments are appropriate. It is crucial that the patient receives a detailed consultation with the surgeon who will perform the surgery and can contact the same physician at any time, even several months later, to ask further questions. I provide my contact information to my patients to ensure proper communication and that they receive adequate information. I will regularly take photographs and conduct follow-up phone calls as needed to ensure that patients living far away can continue to receive high-quality care. Patients considering surgery should seek comprehensive medical advice beforehand to determine if surgery is truly necessary. Experience has shown that consulting a physician is particularly important in making the best possible decision for the patient. Following a detailed analysis and consultation, it is possible to develop a satisfactory treatment plan.
Third important point: As a doctor, I personally perform the procedure! As a doctor, I intervene directly and am supported by two or three assistants. Unlike most Turkish clinics that require a full team of medical staff to perform the surgery, I personally perform the basic steps of the operation.
This includes consultation, training, planning and hairline design, anesthesia, hair harvesting, and opening of recipient channels. From a medical perspective, hair transplantation is a surgical procedure where at least 70% of the activities, such as anesthesia, hair harvesting, and channel opening, must be performed by the physician.
Fourth important point: Limited capacity. Since the most important stages of hair transplantation are performed in-house, the number of patients treated per day is limited to one, at most two.
Unlike other Turkish clinics that treat more than 50 patients a day, a more relaxed environment is created here, without rushing or time pressure.
Fifth important point: Full expertise in hair transplantation surgery. One of the focuses of our clinic is specializing in hair surgery, including hair transplantation, beard transplantation, and eyebrow transplantation. We do not perform other surgical procedures. Our clinic in Istanbul specializes in hair transplantation. We place great importance on acting according to our patients’ specific circumstances and expectations. Before our patients are discharged, we ensure they receive all necessary information and have all their questions answered in detail to ensure a safe and successful return home.
What advice would you give your patients to protect them from questionable service providers?
Avoid using advertisements that refer to supposedly innovative techniques, guarantees, and claims such as painless, shave-free, and scar-free.
These bold statements will unfortunately not help you if the result does not look natural or if a large portion of the donor hair has been used.
Despite my many years of experience and having performed over 1,500 surgeries myself, I cannot guarantee a definitive treatment outcome.
Hair transplantation is a highly personalized surgical procedure with unpredictable results, unlike the production of standard products (cars, televisions).

Various hair transplantation techniques are available, such as the Sapphire method and the Sapphire DHI method. These techniques have different advantages and application areas. Patients with large bald areas and thin hair benefit most from the Sapphire method.
In cases where hair thickening is necessary, we recommend the Sapphire DHI method, as it allows hair transplantation even into gaps between existing hairs. The Sapphire DHI method is particularly advantageous for elderly patients, smokers, and patients with high blood pressure or metabolic disorders.

Based on the results, we can recommend the most suitable method for you. Then, as your doctor, I will conduct a detailed personal consultation via video conference before the surgery.
Together, we will analyze all aspects of the surgery in detail. After Dr. Aslan evaluates your medical history, we will determine the appropriate surgical method and the minimum number of grafts to be transplanted. On the day of the surgery, a preliminary examination will be conducted where the hair can be examined for the first time.
In rare cases, an alternative transplant technique is recommended. In this case, the patient will be informed of all the details and benefits of this change during the preliminary examination. The price of this additional technique will be calculated appropriately according to the number of grafts and the technique used.
A positive final result can be expected from the early evaluation of the results six to twelve months after the procedure.

Dr. Ismail Aslan CV
Dr. Aslan studied medicine at Selçuk University in Konya between 1990 and 1997. From 1998 to 2019, he worked as a general practitioner in various clinics and hospitals in Türkiye, specializing in general medicine, emergency medicine, occupational health and safety, aesthetic medicine, and hair surgery.
Since 2010, Dr. Aslan has completed numerous international continuing education programs and medical-aesthetic training courses in Germany, Turkey, and other countries.
In 2012-2013, Dr. Aslan completed theoretical and practical training in aesthetic medicine and FUE/FUT hair transplantation in Istanbul, Türkiye.
After completing his specialization in hair surgery in 2013, Dr. Aslan opened his own hair clinic in Istanbul, Türkiye. Therefore, he is one of the most experienced doctors in Türkiye.
Since 2010, he has performed over 1,500 hair transplantation operations in Türkiye.
Dr. Dr. Aslan specializes in FUE hair transplantation, performing repairs of failed hair transplants, hairline corrections, and transplantation for scars (e.g., old scars remaining from FUT strip hair transplantation).
Patients dissatisfied with their hair transplant results consult Dr. Aslan for correction of previous procedures.
In 2013, he began his hair transplantation project in collaboration with many hair surgeons in his private clinic.
In 2012, he attended a workshop where he observed the FUE procedure in real-time, which led him to combine the FUT procedure with FUE.

Dr. Aslan has observed that patients undergoing FUE treatment are significantly more satisfied with the results than those undergoing FUT treatment. The FUE method resulted in minimal scalp damage and inconspicuous scarring, even on short hair.
The continuous improvement in technology, performance, and results with the introduction of new devices and methods has led to improvements in the hair transplantation process. Dr. Aslan currently practices the FUE hair transplantation procedure and sees patients from all over the world in Germany and Türkiye (Istanbul).
Dr. Aslan moved to Germany in 2019 and worked in the Internal Medicine and Cardiology Department of Median Klinik. He received his German medical license in Leipzig in 2020.
Since 2020, Dr. Aslan has been working as a freelance physician in reputable practices and clinics in Germany, maintaining regular contact and professional exchange with leading experts in the field of hair transplantation.
